Laid Off Mt Vernon Workers Reinstated
Laid Off Mt Vernon Workers Reinstated July 13, 2010 CSEA Southern Region President Billy Riccaldo and the workers at the Mount Vernon Public Library today praised Mount Vernon officials for agreeing to reinstate the 14 library workers who were laid off July 2.
Riccaldo, Westchester Local President Jack McPhillips, Newman and incoming Westchester Local President John Staino met with the elected officials within the last week to discuss the layoffs. The announcement comes just days after a sweltering noontime rally and press conference with the workers on the steps of City Hall.
"We want to thank Mayor Clinton Young, Jr., Comptroller Maureen Walker, and City Council President J. Yuhanna Edwards, for meeting with the workers, hearing their concerns and finding the funds to save these jobs and the important services they perform for the people of Mount Vernon," said Riccaldo.
"Last week, many of these proud workers, joined by their families and dozens of community members, spoke passionately and eloquently about saving this library for our children and their children," said Riccaldo. "We are glad that our local leaders agreed and we're excited about working with them to secure additional grants and funds to make this library the best in the state." The Libraries provide such a valuable service to people of all ages, for education, inquiries, recreation, music & more. Those down on their luck use the libraries just as we do, but also to cool off in the summer & keep warm in the winter. It is a place where they can stay out of trouble, a place of peace for them, where they are not bothered & harassed. For a society to thrive, they must have access to libraries.
